Dear Mr. Carter,
In the following essay I will be discussing the reasons why I would like to be in the writing course for my second semester of grade ten, and which types of writing I feel as though I am strong at and my weaker writing topics. Also I will be talking about what I hope to achieve by taking this course.
In my spare time I play soccer and volley ball,I baby sit occasionally and I love to read different novels. I have recently just finished a romance novel by Nicholas sparks called “The Best of Me” which was a really good read and is now one of my favorite books of all time. All though I love romance novels I also really enjoy mysteries, horror stories and fiction a non-fiction books as well.
The only writing piece that I am currently working on is a book report for my English class on the novel “The Best of Me”.
My all time favorite writer is Nicholas sparks but I also really like Ransom Riggs. Both of these authors write different book for example Nicholas writes love stories that could be real and ransom write about ghosts and mystical things that are more than likely all fictional. My favorite book by Ransom is “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”. One kind of writing that I find challenging is formal writing. Formal writing in particular is more difficult for me because, I am surrounded by people who speak using slang including myself which makes it more difficult to write using proper English. Types of writing that comes easier for me are short stories, descriptive writing pieces and letters.
The ideas that I come up with for my writing pieces are usually inspired by current events, TV shows, or just my imagination. One piece of writing that I am very proud of is one that I wrote a couple years back in my spare time about society. In this piece of writing I talked about how people at this day and age are very judgemental and how they judge people before they even take a step in the other person’s shoes. This is a topic that I am very passionate and opinionated on because coming from a small town I am very familiar with judgmental people and being judged simply because of where you come from. also being judged on your past mistakes is a big problem with today’s society. Usually when writing a piece whether it be formal or informal I write one draft copy then my final copy. When the draft copy is completed I like to go through it and check spelling, grammar, how well the story flows and to make sure all of the ideas relate well to each other.
As a writer I feel like my strength is voice in a piece of writing, not only do I think this but I have also been told this by some of my classmates and teachers when I have read my stories aloud in class. In my personal opinion I think that voice is one of the strongest elements in a story because it adds more personalities to a story and makes it more interesting. Although i am good at voice I can’t quite grasp the element of dialogue in a story. When trying to incorporate dialogue I get very confused and frustrated so this is one of the things that I would like to improve on if by chance I do get accepted into writing.
If I had to choose my favorite subject it would absolutely be English class. I have an interest in English class because I love reading so much and I love to improve my writing skills as much as I can, Also I find English class very calm and interesting. As a class novel we have just recently finished the book “To Kill a Mockingbird”. That book is absolutely amazing and has a very valuable message behind it; if you haven’t read that novel I strongly suggest it because you will not regret it. My goals and expectation of taking the writing course are to improve my over all writing skills and become a better student in both my English class and of course writing class, I’m hoping that if I do get accepted that my English mark will improve . If a do get the opportunity to take part in writing I would feel very privileged and will try my hardest to learn as much as possible.
Sincerely,
Lauren Vickers.
